Even though I did  not participate in the epic queue for the wake, Lizzy and I decided to volunteer when our church decided to give our drinks and snacks to the people lining up the gun carriage route today.  The crowds started forming up 3 hours before the carriage was scheduled to pass Bouna Vista. We were giving out water, bread, biscuits and umbrellas alongside Sheng Siong who were giving out drinks and snacks as well. We used their trolley and helped them give out their bottled water. Bread was more popular than biscuits because biscuits were too dry.

It poured like crazy as if heaven was mourning as well. Everyone braved the rain for a few hours for a few seconds of chanting as the carriage passed. This bigger-than-NDP-and-Chingay scene probably would not repeat in our lifetime.

Later when we attended service, they interrupted the sermon so that we could join the live broadcast and observe the minute of silence with the rest of the country. When the national pledge was recited and the national anthem was sang, I have never felt so emotional singing Majulah Singapura before. For one, I have not sang the National Anthem for some time. Images of National Service and various NDPs which I attended flashed through my mind. Even attending the NDP ‘live’ was nothing compared to this. Suddenly, I never felt as appreciative of Singapore as I was before, with tears in my eyes.

There was a photo of a rainbow appearing on Instagram. A new beginning for the future of Singapore. After Moses, there is Joshua.

There’s a few interesting food clusters in Singapore, which are good places to eat/chill/pit stop for road trip. Here’s a few places to check out (not an extensive list):

1. Holland Village
   This one needs no introduction.  I’m sure everyone knows/heard of Holland V before. After all, there’s the Singlish term “Hor Lan” i.e. getting lost which is derived from “Holland”

   This place is pretty near Bouna Vista MRT, but hidden in a cluster of colonial buildings. Looks atas, should check out some day!

   This cluster is just opposite Holland Village. Never really been there before.

4. Greenwood Avenue
   This cluster is quite ulu, near Bukit Timah Road. Never been there before.

5. Sunset Way
   This is along Clementi Road, very near NUS, and also where the abandoned railway track is. Never knew there are so many restaurants there!

6. Dempsey
   Another cluster of old colonial barracks converted to many restaurants such as P.S. Cafe, Ben and Jerry’s, and many bars and pubs. Been there a few times.

7. Serangoon Gardens
   Famous for Chomp Chomp, it also has various other cafes and bars, and is the Holland V of the northeast =)
8. Jalan Kayu
   Used to be famous for Roti Prata, but now is just a cluster of many malay/indian restaurants and some others.
9. Upper Thomson Road (near Sin Ming Road)
   Now this is famous for Roti Prata, with Prata House and a few other stuff, and the Longhouse Food Centre nearby.
10. Geylang / Sims Avenue (from Lor 11 to Lor 21)
    There’s the Wen Dao Shi dim sum, lots of durian stalls, a branch of Rochor Soya Bean, and various coffeeshops.
11. The Rail Mall
    A strip mall located along Upper Bukit Timah Road, overlooking one of the railway bridges. I heard Cafe Epicurious is nice.
12. Bukit Timah Road (from Farrer Road to Coronation Walk)
    Firstly, there’s Serene Center where Island Creamery is. Then there’s the famous Adam Road Hawker Centre across. Then in the various buildings scattered here, there’s my favourite Sogurt frozen yoghurt, Mad Jack, Starbucks, NTUC Fairprice and various other eateries.
13. Upper Bukit Timah Road (opposite Beauty World)
    Various Roti Prata/Malay/Indian-Muslim shops, some hotpot, Udders ice cream, and a few other eateries.
14. Upper Serangoon Road (from Tampines Road to Hougang St 31)
    This place is a stone’s throw from Kovan MRT, used to be my church’s favourite hangout. There’s Punggol Nasi Lemak, various coffeeshops, midnight curry, Dominic’s Pizza, a branch of Selegie Soya Bean, and many other stuff.
15. Teck Chye Terrace (near Upper Serangoon Road / Upper Paya Lebar Road junction)
    I can’t remember what’s here, but I always pass by on the bus and saw various restaurants and durian.
16. Playground @ Big Splash (East Coast Park)
    A nice claypot place, Oldtown, Carl’s Junior, some seafood restaurant and some bars
17. Siglap Road / East Coast Road
    Many eateries like HK Cafe, Udders, Starbucks, the Holland V of the east.

I think there’s definitely more. Mental note to myself: should check out Republic of Singapore Yacht Club too.

Who says that Singapore is too small for a road trip?

Here’s a rough plan for a few road trips to the most ulu (remote) ‘countryside’ places in Singapore, or in other words, places which most Singaporeans never knew existed and/or have never been there before. Some of the places are road-ends, many are parks, beaches and shores, and some are man-built structures. Most places are only accessible by car. Some food places are included for your enjoyment. As there are too many destinations, I decided to split them into 3 segments: Northern, Southwestern and Southeastern. However, since they are linked, you can possibly travel all of them at one go, if you have enough time, and maybe skipping some destinations. (After creating this, I found out that Google Maps only allow a maximum of 25 destinations in their Directions.) Photos are either taken by myself, or from flickr, or from other blogs.

I have not tried the actual proposed routes yet, will update if I get the chance to. Most of the destinations are based on my previous experience in exploring Singapore by car. Some of them are new/recently built which I have not been to before, and some which I just found out recently (like Woodlands Waterfront).

A. Kampung Buangkok

Start off the day by going to a rustic area. This is the only surviving real village/kampung left in urbanised mainland Singapore. Visit it before it’s completely gone! It’s a little place as if trapped in a time warp zone, with zinc-roofed houses and small roads and animals running around.

B. Punggol Road End / Punggol Point

Punggol is about to be transformed into the waterfront town of the 21st Century. Visit the road end, where they are building a nice beach, and see Pulau Serangoon / Coney Island across the strait, which will be developed into a resort island of sorts in future. On a side note, Bus 84 U-turns on this road. In the past, many buses used to start from bus terminals at road-ends.

Update: Now there is a “ranch” and two restaurants at the end, with more seafood restaurants under construction.

C. Seletar Estate/ Jalan Kayu / Old Seletar Camp

This place is going to be demolished and redeveloped into Seletar Aerospace Park. It is a very tranquil estate with many colonial bungalows and buildings, with English road names such as Oxford, Hyde Park and Piccadilly, makes you feel as if you’re in an England suburb. Faster visit before everything is gone!

D. Seletar North Link / Pulau Punggol Barat / Pulau Punggol Timor

This is a newly constructed road on two reclaimed lands. Both are relatively empty except for some construction materials (sand) storage areas. Pretty interesting “countryside” area which I have not been before. I first knew about it through a Straits Times report.

E. Yishun Dam

Yishun Dam along Yishun Avenue 1 separates Lower Seletar Reservoir from the sea. As it is a long and straight road, it is a favourite spot for racing-cars-wannabes. Beware of police at night. Other than that, it’s pretty scenic and peaceful.

I. Sembawang Road End / Sembawang Park

Check out another road-end and see some ships pass by the Johor Strait with the shipyards on both sides. Nearby is Sembawang Park, a popular area for people who live nearby.

J. Admiralty Road West / Woodlands Waterfront

URA just built a new little park facing the Johor Strait with one or two jetties. Drive through the road that is closest to Johor Bahru, check out their skyline, and see how impossible (or possible) it is to swim over. Haha just joking.

L. Kranji War Memorial

This is an interesting place where many war victims and soldiers were buried. The place looks quite picturesque in the day, but eerie at night. I always wanted to visit it but haven’t got a chance it.

M. Kranji Reservoir Park / Kranji Dam

Yes, this is another dam for another reservoir for Singapore’s water needs. The water looks nice on both sides, one is the Johor Strait, one is the reservoir itself.

N. Kranji Countryside: BBC Antennas, Farms, Agriculture

Kranji is an interesting place with many farms and nature reserves. As you drive down Kranji way, you will notice a vast area of land with some weird looking antennas. They are part of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Relay Station. The combination of antennas and vast area of flat land makes this countryside area look very foreign, reminiscent of a scene from some country with vast areas of land. There are many attractions in Kranji, such as the D’Kranji Farm Resort, Jurong Frog Farm, Hay Diary Industries, Bollywood Veggies and many more. And of course, Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve is also in Kranji. You can possibly take many days to explore all the attractions there.

O. Lim Chu Kang Road End

Yes this is the 3rd road end in this list. It has a small private jetty and offers an interesting view of the Malaysian countryside. Wonder if Mas Selamat came here. Haha.

P. Choa Chu Kang Cemetery

Singapore’s largest cemetery area tucked away in a corner. It’s quite interesting if you only seen it on TV and not otherwise. Just be careful at night. As you drive down Lim Chu Kang Road, you will also notice that the road is exceptionally wide and straight, as it is one of the emergency runways. Race-car-wannabes frequent here often too.

Q. Qian Hu Fish Farm (Optional)

C. Memories at Old Ford Factory

One of the remaining World War 2 commemorative sites in Singapore, where the British surrendered to the Japanese. Some of you may have been here on your National Education trips though.

D. Little Guilin / Bukit Batok Town Park

This famous place, a lake formed from an old granite quarry, is called 小桂林 as it looks similar to the real 桂林 in China. Often used in the scenes of many MediaCorp TV dramas, it is a nice scenic place.

E. Church of St Mary of the Angels

This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful modern (Catholic) churches in Singapore. Tucked away in a corner of Bukit Batok, it has a heavenly peaceful sanctuary with the body of Jesus hung midair from the ceiling. Sublime.

F. Bukit Timah Railway Station

The Malaysian KTM Railway is about to be shifted to Woodlands Checkpoint. With all the fanfare of the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, little is known or mentioned about the Bukit Timah one. This station is not really operating, but there is still some people there. It is very laid back and there is a nice bridge. But please do not walk on the tracks until they really close down the railway. (You can do so in the next stop.)

G. Abandoned Railway Track / Bridge near Sunset Way

This one is really abandoned, so you can safely walk on it. It used to be a track linking Bukit Timah to the factories in Jurong. Park near Blk 104 and walk up the slope. Apparently, the rails have been overgrown with ferns and plants. The bridge is still intact although slightly dangerous if you do not watch you step. I have not been there before, but definitely would love to check this out. I love railways!

H. Jurong Hill Observatory Tower

Other than Jurong Bird Park, there is a nice observatory tower in this corner of Singapore. On a clear day, you can see all the (polluting) petrochemical industries and ports in the whole of Jurong, and at night, you can see all the lights glittering from the industrial city.

I. Tuas! (Optional)

This one is a bit far and out of the way, but if you never been to Tuas before, it is a good drive. Tuas South Ave 5 and Ave 14 is the southwest-most corner of Singapore which you can get. It also seems to be another emergency runway. Unfortunately, there are no beautiful beaches here, except for loads of factories. You could still see the sea and ships passing by though.

J. Kent Ridge Park

As you drive down South Bouna Vista Road, it is possibly one of the most crooked road in Singapore. Kent Ridge is another WW2 historic site, there are some tanks placed here. It is also part of the Southern Ridges Trail, offering nice overlooks over the Pasir Panjang Harbour, and linking to HortPark towards the east.

K. Labrador Nature Reserve

Labrador is always rumoured to have a secret tunnel to Sentosa. Sadly, they are closed for maintenance. Well, other than that, it has a pretty good lookout to the western harbour with a jetty offering a nice stroll and place to watch the sunset.

L. Keppel Island / Marina at Keppel Bay

There’s a slight error in Google Maps, it doesn’t show the bridge across to Pulau Keppel. In any case, it is a nice private island with a park and yacht clubhouse but accessible to the public. Have a taste of the bourgeois in the restaurants there, especially the Prive cafe. Take a short stroll around the island, or have a picnic beside the waters where the huge cruise ships pass by. I think the bridge is the most romantic at night. Nice private place which is not too crowded!

M. Mount Faber

It’s not exactly a mountain, but who cares. I’m sure you may have been to Mount Faber before. But have you driven down Mount Faber before? It feels like Initial D, especially at night. Hahaha. It is also part of the Southern Ridges, with the Henderson Waves bridge nearby.

N. Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre at Seng Poh Rd

Most young people probably been to Tiong Bahru Plaza above the MRT but probably not the famous Seng Poh Road Hawker Centre. Although it has been revamped, many of the stalls are still the authentic famous kind, such as Tiong Bahru Fishball, Tiong Bahru Pau, Tiong Bahru something something. If got queue = good! Be sure to also visit the much raved ‘art-deco’ shophouses built by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), the predecessor to the HDB, in the pre- and post-war periods. Block 78 is an interesting U-shaped building with old-school winding staircases and alleys at the back. There is even a film about civic life in this area by the British Council.

O. Marina South Pier

Did you know that other than Marina Barrage, there is also the Marina South Pier? This is the place to go if you want to take ferries to Kusu and St John’s Island. A new International Cruise Terminal will also be built near it in future. The modern-looking building has a nice rooftop with grass to sit on, offering a good view of the ships and the sea. It is also pretty romantic at night.

C. Original Katong Laksa at 1 Telok Kurau

Well, the original Katong Laksa is…not in Katong, according to ieatishootipost. I have tried the ‘fake’ ones at the Katong area,  but I didn’t know there is this real one at Telok Kurau. Shall go try next time.

D. Newater Visitor Centre (Optional)

If you have not been to this place in your National Education visits, it’s pretty interesting to see and know how our Newater is created. A little gross if you think about it, but drink and don’t think.

E. Changi Coast Road

Take a nice leisurely drive on the eastern-most road of Singapore, seeing planes taking off and landing at Changi Airport. Don’t anyhow stop and take photos though, the airport police may find you suspicious.

F. Changi Beach Park

After driving pass the SAF Ferry Terminal (yeah), you will reach Changi Beach. Quite a popular camping spot for plane spotters, it has a nice shore, and relatively quieter than East Coast or Pasir Ris Parks.
