Assignment 1: Exposure Triangle

by Colin posted September 6, 2011 category Assignment 1

Shallow Depth of Field

I decided to choose this beetle photo and used Photoshop Lightroom presets to tweak it. I think the Casuarina fruit beside it looks interesting too.

Aperture: f/2.8
Camera: Canon EOS 500D
Taken: 3 September, 2011
Focal length: 50 mm
ISO: 800
Shutter speed: 1/4000 s

Deep Depth of Field

The cycling path forms deep vanishing lines into the image. Aperture was increased in value to create deeper focus.

Aperture: f/20
Camera: Canon EOS 500D
Taken: 3 September, 2011
Focal length: 25 mm
ISO: 200
Shutter speed: 1/15 s

Freeze Action

I selected this shot from the Suntec City Fountain because it shows the joyful facial expressions of the kids, as well as the crystal quality of the water with the fast shutter speed.

Aperture: f/2.8
Camera: Canon EOS 500D
Taken: 4 September, 2011
Focal length: 47 mm
ISO: 800
Shutter speed: 1/4000 s

Blur Motion

From the same cycling track at East Coast Park, I placed the camera on the floor to have a stable base for longer shutter speeds. I experimented with a few shots of people jogging and cycling by. Sometimes I have to wait for the correct moment so that the people walk at the correct position in frame. I think that this one with the dual bicycle looks the most interesting.

Aperture: f/14
Camera: Canon EOS 500D
Taken: 3 September, 2011
Focal length: 50 mm
ISO: 100
Shutter speed: 1/20 s

Panning

This shot was kind of accidental, I was trying to take the freeze action shot but I panned slightly with the cyclist instead and it came out as a panning shot!

Aperture: f/14

One Response to Assignment 1: Exposure Triangle

  1. These are the comments about the above photos during tutorial today:

Shallow DOF: good colours and composition. Colour filter is well used in this case. But beetle may look unnatural or dead?

Deep DOF: good execution. No comments. (Point learnt: Deep depth of field needs something in contrast from foreground, mid-ground and background, which is present in this photo.)

Freeze Action: too little water in composition since it is the main thing that is frozen. Fountain may be more suitable for blurred motion. Maybe just the water with people behind. Under exposed. Too dark. (Silky moving water is easier and nicer to capture. Water as a sculpture is harder to capture and depends how the water is flowing.)

Blurred Motion: Colour is too green. Backside shot reveals amateurism. But good rule of thirds.

Pan: Angle is too acute and hence the pan is not that obvious. Another backside shot.
