Assignment 3: Zombiesity Montage

by Colin posted October 10, 2011 category Assignment 3

I thought about Urban Fantasy, then I tried to define what fantasy is. Fantasy can be magic (think Harry Potter), can be science fiction (Star Wars? Final Fantasy?) or horror (Zombieland), or old medieval stuff. I like playing Left 4 Dead, a first person shooter based on zombies, so why not cross zombies and a city, or better yet, imagine Zombies in a post-apocalypse Singapore? After looking online for various inspiration and tutorials, I came up with this:

I thought it was pretty fun to destroy some of the iconic skyscrapers we have. Some friends said the meteors were unnecessary, so here’s a non-meteor version with a cooler sky:

On a side note, I learnt how to do non-destructive burn and dodge while doing this assignment. As for the photos used, there were 3 main photos of Zombie Marches from flickr (here, here and here), while the main image of the skyline was taken myself from the Esplanade Park. I also used a picture of clouds/sky I took last time. The rubble and debris were all sourced online, and also the fallen Merlion (it’s somewhat hidden but if you look carefully you can spot it). Some Photoshop brushes of fog/mist/cracks/smoke were also used. Here’s a gallery of all the original images used:

  1. Comments from the class:

Meteors look cool but are unnecessary. If have meteors should have explosions.
The non-meteor version needs a more bluish treatment to the buildings.

Overall the perspective is very safe, not much to comment. But zombies at the front can be bigger to make them look scarier and stand out.

  2. Hey, sorry I didn’t stay back to comment as I was rushing for class.

I think the warm colors of the first pic don’t fit a zombie apocalypse. If u look a popular portrayals of zombies (ie L4D) most are cool colors and zombies have a pale sheen to them. Hence I prefer the 2nd one!

But great effort. The perspective and vibe is about right. 🙂

  3. It’s very Good article, cordialy man.
