Final Project: Brainstorming

by Colin posted November 17, 2011 category Final Assignment

Initially, my group had some problems brainstorming for the final project. The scope was too broad (or rather, there was no theme at all) and we were unable to find something which is conceptually good. The concept is very important, and it has to be artistic and abstract, in order to bring the interactive piece across.

Our first idea floated around “Food tagging”, some sort of “Restaurant City” view where you can see the ultimate Singaporean food menu and then you can see the ingredients, and not just the food, being tagged in it. However, it was too website-like and it lacked a concept behind these food photos, hence it was badly criticized when we presented it to the class.

We went to brainstorm a few other ideas, of which include the following:
– “Build your own skyline”: provide photos of buildings from around the world, and the user can piece together their own skyline. (Of which later Ms Jing suggested thinking about “Mobile City“)
– Famous portraits being dissected into their individual parts e.g. eyes mouth etc.
– Environment: see how your carbon footprint has impact on the world
– Priorities: What are the priorities in your life? What if you are given coins to “pay” for your priorities, which will you buy first? Vending-machine style interaction which outputs the outcome of your priorities

However, these are just interactions and they still do not have a strong concept. It was very frustrating…

So one day, I was ‘mediating’ on the project rubric, which has the title Untitled, and I thought to myself, what if we made something that is really about Untitled? It may sound crazy and lame, based on the word play of “Untitled”. We can take photos of everything that has titles: books, DVDs, movie posters, places etc. and then the interactivity is to erase all the titles and type in “Untitled”. Or all the titles are now “untitled” and you can erase to reveal the actual title or give your own title. It was a slightly rebellious wordplay of the title of the project, but it turned out to be a successful concept which we executed in the end =)
