Assignment 2 Revised

Degree-of-Abstraction-small-v3

Here’s a revised version of my Degree of Abstraction based on the feedback from my tutorial.

  1. 3D Perspective View
  2. Convert to 2D View
  3. Zoomed in, remove ‘stool’
  4. Remove power adapter box and table on the left
  5. Remove laptop screen and table on the right, and simplified cable looping

My sign should be indexical and imperative, as the line symbolises a dangling cable and influences the receiver not to leave his/her cables dangling. And here’s the proposed location of the sign, on one of the pillars of the library:

Degree of Abstraction v2

Degree-of-Abstraction-small-v2I realised that I should reduce the abstraction level for step 1. So here’s an amended version.

  1. Full view of laptop, power adapter, table and chair in 3D perspective
  2. Convert to 2D view
  3. Zoomed in
  4. Removal of power adapter box and chair in the middle
  5. Removal of table and simplifcation of cable twisting

Degree of Abstraction

I decided to expand the ‘no dangling of (power) cables’ idea in the library and created a pictogram. The steps of the degree of abstraction are shown below:

  1. Degree-of-Abstraction-smallFull view of laptop, power adapter, table and chair
  2. Zoomed in
  3. Removal of chair in the middle
  4. Removal of table and simplifcation of cable twisting
  5. Removal of laptop screen and further simplifcation of twisting

Personally, I think step 4 or 5 are suitable for the prototype and is not too abstract to understand.

Research for Possible Pictograms

assign2-1

I always thought that the laptop power cables dangling in the library are very unslightly. They are hazardous and people can trip over them easily. Here’s another picture below.

I was passing by the rag/float construction of my faculty. How about a pictogram to say “No Rag Building” in a certain area?
